$45
Beautiful myrtle wood salad bowl and serving pieces. This is marked The House Myrtle Wood Coos Bay Oregon. The bowl measures approximately 9 inches in diameter at the rim and 10 inches in diameter at the widest and xx inches high. The fork and spoon measure approximately 9 1/2 inches long. Thses are in good barely (if ever) used vintage condition.
Myrtlewood- Oregon Myrtle (Umbellularia Californica), a far-off member of the Laurel family, is indigenous only to the Southern Oregon and Northern Oregon California coast. It is really a bush that sometimes grows into a tree. In California it is generally found in bush form, but in the fertile river bottoms of the Southern Oregon coast it flourishes into a majestic tree.
Due to the slow growth of the Myrtle Tree, it develops burls which, when polished, have exquisite, intricate and elicit markings (birdseye, ribbon, fiddleback). The wood is extremely dense and finely grained which makes it ideal for trays, bowls and other fine items. it has a color range from light tan to deep golden brown, from shades of gray to velvet black, with various hues of color. It is impossible to match as no two pieces are the same. This is especially true in the choosing of bowls., as all pieces are handcrafted resulting in each piece truly "one of a kind".
