Antique Historical CLEWS STAFFORDSHIRE 10.5” DINNER PLATE featuring AMERICA AND INDEPENDENCE written beneath 2 statues, a portrait of George Washington, and the impressed Clews Staffordshire Crown hallmark. Around the plate, written in a scallop design, are the names of the 15 "Independent" states from Delaware — 1st to belong to America in 1787 — through Kentucky, last to join in 1792. Circa: 1820.
Brothers Ralph and James Clews rented a pottery works in Staffordshire in 1815 and began producing high quality, blue transfer wares until their partnership ended in 1834. Highly collectible, the Clews plates in good condition are a rare find.
