REDUCED * 2021 SOFTCOVER * "THE SPECTACULAR" by Zoe Whittall
$3
“The Spectacular” is mainly about two women, a mother and daughter with motherhood being a very central theme.
There are three generations of women, each with their own ideas about life and motherhood - a great exploration of the choices available to women across generations (topical today with regards to what is going on in the USA changing the abortion laws).
Missy, a musician lives life on her own terms. She spent her early life with her parents on a commune. Her mother Carola, aka Juniper left her when she was twelve. Her paternal grandmother fled Turkey with her husband and his mistress for a safer life in Canada. Each of these women struggle with motherhood, and Whittall goes into a lot of depth on how their backgrounds and generations affected their life decisions.
The book explores women’s sexuality, autonomy, feminism and reminds us that while we love our children unconditionally, it's ok to not love motherhood all the time.
This is a great read but be forewarned that there are some possible trigger topics in this novel (drug use, alcohol, abortion, abandonment) - It is raw and with some strong language.
This First Edition was just issued in 2021 and is currently selling in stores for $19.99 to $24.99.
