The best known Noritake pieces are marked with an M in a wreath for the Morimura Brothers, a New York City distributing company. This mark was used until the 1940's. Noritake popularized Lusterware in the early 1920's through the mid 1930's. Lusterware had a bright single-colored glaze over which a thin metallic film was applied, resulting in a rainbow or iridescence. Handing paintings were used with luster finishes that resulting in stunning pieces
The trading company, which started the history of Noritake trademark was Morimura Brothers in New York in 1876. The company imported chinaware, curiosities, paper lanterns and other gift items. Founders of the business were Ichizaemon Morimura VI and his brother Toyo. In 1890s the company started working on design improvements for the pottery and porcelain ware
In 1904 the Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. closely connected with Morimura Brothers in the village of Noritake established a factory. The village was situated near Nagoya, Japan.
