An antique is considered as such when it reaches 100 years of age. This is close, as the ER Co made cedar chests from post WWI (1918) until right after the boom of WW II (1951). This was one of the earlier pieces so while it may not technically be an antique, it is quite close. It is in excellent condition, with the usual characteristics of an aged wooden piece. In my mind, it means it’s perfect. The original finish was water damaged, so I sanded and repainted it in mineral fusion paint, Putty and Coal Black. An additional wax was added to further enhance the beautiful details. One ball ‘foot’ on one leg is missing a small section, but it is difficult to notice without looking for it. (Full disclosure). The inside cedar chest smells heavenly and cedar is a natural repellant for moths and other creatures. 5e chest measures approx 40” by 17.5”. With the legs, it is 23” tall. The chest alone is 12.5” tall.
Originally created as Bridal hope chests, these can be used to store blankets, treasured possessions, and make the perfect piece to hand down for generations. This belonged to someone’s mother and while I lovingly restored it, now it needs a new home in which to hold special memories of those who live within that house
